What is the difference between Pokemon Black and Pokemon White?

So I'm entirely new to this whole Pokemon gaming thing, but it's piqued my interest and I want to try it out. I know that Black and White are the newest versions, but what's the difference between the two? If you've played both, which do you prefer?
